The second time ever that I beat Nathan at chess (out of perhaps 30 times), the game came so close...
We have exactly the same pieces - my (ivory) castle being still at the corner.
He made a move at some point where he lost his, and then I moved my pawn to the far edge where,
the blood of the innocent was spilled for the resurrection of a queen.
Always interesting to play against Nathan though.

It's not an essay, but it was worth a try - a poem. I literally came up with in 5 minutes. I don't care too much for it, and I doubt it's good. It's based one of two dreams I had during the same night. It's called 'Dreamed Werewolves'.

Excerpt (the first paragraph) from the preface,

Here's my psychological assession...

Let start with the words,
"Most people, perhaps you, are haunted by self-destructive feeling they don't understand."
He starts with trying to 'attack' those people who might have some personal problems and in some areas, do feel inferior about themselves. This is the hook and bait. You open wide if you're not too strong, and you're already reading on...

"These are feeling that may frighten and depress you."
This is a second attempt - for those who didn't bite the first time. Here, he's generalizing... As if no one on this Earth has any fears or depressions...

"For example..."
He lists a few things, he sure to hit some marks that you agree could be some of your short comings. Once you agree with any point, you start tending to agree with the rest - though they may not even be true.

"The fear that you are now and will always remain..."
The first use of the word 'you' - he's sure now he's got a biter by personalizing things.

"Because of two crippling pressures, the constant attempts of other people to exploit you, and your own self-destructive feeling of inferiority."
The attempt of making you think he's superior to you by defining your thoughts.

"You spend your life in an emotional prison instead of a palace."
His second attempt at making you feel inferior by making it sound like he has answers to your questions, as if he had a palace to grant to you, and that you are actually in a prison now.

"You allow yourself..."
These words are used to TELL you what you are... He's trying to seriously fuck around now.

"Learn to control your destiny. Study the ancient sciences..."
The idea of giving the reader some sort of ultimate power by learning to control his/her destiny. Then quickly giving you the 'all you have to do' line. ("All you have to do" = hidden charges)

"...for this knowledge will guide through the present age of anxiety and depression."
This supreme knowledge will be my savior? This line's dripping with shady, disgustingly (and so far uncharacteristically sweet of the idiot) sugary sweetness. As if he took pity on the damned soul of the reader...

READ THIS BOOK: If you have any paranoia, are looking for a case schizophrenia and a buddy called Zolar, and trust people with weird made-up names that try to subtly and stupidly take over the world with their cheesy self-proclaimed 'charms'.

OR BECAUSE: You want a way to waste time by laughing at someone's pathetic and fraudulent effort at 'trying to help others' by sharing their "ancient and forbidden knowledge" that's neither really too ancient nor actually forbidden.

BETTER YET: DON'T READ THIS BOOK.

PS: Trust no one who has a weird name and are acclaimed to be or call themselves the master of the occult - especially if they have weird 90's sci-fi movies sounding names.. They usually are very crappy people.

As of today, it was recorded, more or less, that the population of Earth is 6,658,769,205. That means that there are 6,658,769,205 individual and unique ways in which people perceive our world. From all walks of life - literally. Every single moment of every single person passing by, never, ever - not once - being repeated in the same exact way.
When I was a little girl, my world was seen as if through a camera's lens. I say this not because I carried a security camera with me everywhere, but because in photographs, things are not seen as they are through human eyes. The camera's eye focuses, and when it blinks, it memorizes a scene - but when it does so, what is committed is not the blunt wanness of reality. It is the contrast, the shades, the vibrance, the depth, the personal connections... Without the drab and dingy, without the neutral or the Veil of Monotony covering everything. That is photography - or so I read.
I used to see the world as something marvelous. The sunlight was nearly blinding on the shoulders of the white-fit people, their dark hair ashine. The mud of my relatives' huts seemed more rich, the rain on the leaves on the farm a little clearer. Then, in the US, the stripes on my tabby cat, I could swear, were a darker shade of black, and the lights on cars enough to fool you for bright, coupled stars floating along on the rolling roads. Everything was layered with a bit of heaven, the vibrations or auras were stronger.
When I watch videos of my childhood, I am in disbelief that things were so dull, and today, it feels the opposite - pictures lie to me. They speak, and they say, "Look at the beautiful sun, the black contrast of the people on the beach, and the russet waves." They flaunt their points of view and make sure I have their complete attention.
Perhaps it's only me. Maybe I was delusional then, or am a little color blind now that I'm older - but I can assure you, that when I recently checked, I was quite fine. Or maybe it's that my eyes are not so big nor open as the camera's - or simply that I haven't visited the same places as it has. I can not really tell, and it is often that pictures are edited.
One thing I do wish is to go back to that heaven-dream. To see the world as I used to then. It has been too long since I last saw the beauty of what's around me. I will make sure to keep my eyes and my heart open from now on.
Maybe that's what made the difference.

STORY

A long, long time ago the Jade Emperor wanted to find a means of measuring time, and so he organised a race, and invited all the animals to take part. When they had all lined up on the bank of the river the Emperor explained that to win the big prize - a permanent place in the Zodiac – they would have to be one of the first twelve to cross the swiftly flowing river and reach a designated spot on the opposite shore. Their order in the cycle would be decided by the order in which they finished the race. And so the race began.

The cat wondered how she would get across if she was afraid of water. At the same time, the ox wondered how he would cross with his poor eyesight. The rat suggested that he and the cat jump onto the ox's back and guide him across. But as they were crossing the river, the rat snuck up behind the unsuspecting cat and pushed her into the water. Just as the ox came lumbering ashore, the rat jumped off and raced over the line first, closely followed by the ox. By the time the cat had managed to save herself from drowning and reached the finishing line it was too late for her to win any place in the calendar, and so she vowed to be the enemy of the rat forever after.

After the ox came the tiger, out of breath as she explained to the emperor how difficult it had been to cross the river with the strong currents dragging her downstream all the time. But because she was so strong she had eventually made it to shore and so was named the third animal in the cycle.

Just then there was a flash of fur and whiskers, and out of nowhere appeared the rabbit. He explained that he had crossed the river by jumping onto a floating log that had at first moved rapidly downstream, but had then suddenly been washed to shore. Thus he became the fourth animal in the zodiac cycle.

Coming in fifth place was the dragon, flapping his great wings and breathing fire into the air. The Emperor was very interested to know to why such a great creature like the dragon, who could fly, hadn’t managed to arrive first. The dragon explained that he had been close to finishing when he saw a poor helpless rabbit clinging to a log that was being washed downstream. He therefore stopped and gave a mighty puff of breath to blow the log to the shore. By the time this good deed had been done, four of the other animals had already arrived.

No sooner had the dragon reached the finish line than the sound of galloping hooves was heard and the horse appeared. Hidden in the horse's mane was the snake, who hissed and moved just before the horse crossed the line. The horse got such a shock that she reared up and before she could recover the snake had slithered off her back and crossed the line in sixth place, beating the horse into seventh.

Not long after that, the sheep, monkey and rooster reached the bank of the river together. These three animals had helped each other all through the race. The rooster had found some logs tied together, and invited the other two creatures to go with it. The sheep and the monkey had worked together to clear the weeds, pulled and pushed and eventually managed to get to the other side. This cooperation greatly pleased the Emperor and he promptly declared that the sheep was eighth, the monkey ninth, and the rooster tenth.

Some time later the dog arrived in eleventh place. The Emperor expressed surprise that it had taken her so long despite the fact she was a better swimmer than most of the other animals. The dog explained that it was precisely her love of the water that had delayed her – it had been so refreshing that she simply couldn’t resist playing around for a while. Just as the emperor was wondering if no other animal would reach the finish, an oink, oink, oink was heard and of the pig came waddling into view. To nobody’s surprise he related how he hadn’t been able to resist the temptation of stopping and filling his belly with acorns. After that he had felt the need for a nap, and had only woken up a short time before. And so the pig became the twelfth and last animal of the zodiac cycle.

* The story I was told as a child was one in which the cat had simply fallen asleep because he was lazy, and didn't make it.
